L A N D S C A P E -- L I G H T I N G

Both systems offer certain advantages. Everyone has an opinion to which is better. Based on our 25 years of experience, the below lists our experience and impressions.

12 Volt (aka “Low Voltage”)

120 Volt (aka “Line Voltage”)

This voltage is achieved by "stepping down", reducing or in other words, converting standard 110/120v HIGH voltage into LOW voltage with the use of a 12v transformer.

Standard or High voltage or 110v/120v/130v. This is the voltage that comes directly into most homes.

About Fixtures: Smaller fixtures, More fixture styles

About Fixtures: Larger more durable fixtures,

Features: a transformer is required and you must be aware of voltage drop issues

Features: no transformer is required and there is no concern for voltage drop for landscape lighting applications

12v is safer for outside lighting whether it going to be near a body of water, in water or away from water.

120v may not be as safe for outside lighting, especially in or near a body of water and other considerations must be taken.

Low end or economical 12v systems are very unreliable and offer low satisfaction levels

Low end or economical 120v systems are more reliable and offer more performance

Higher end 12v systems are available in a larger variety of wattages, colors and beam spread options than 120v bulbs.

Higher end 120v systems are not available in a large variety of colors and beam spread options as 12v bulbs.

Buy the most expensive fixture and transformer you can afford... better to buy less lights than cheaper equipment.

Equipment less important in 120v systems, but advanced planning is required, since more difficult to change later.

Unable to add a outlet at each light for seasonal lights or maintenance

Every light post can be an outlet for seasonal lights or maintenance

Best thing about 12v: Amazing Spot potential at over 20 feet.

Best thing about 120v: More illumination
