Arc-Faults – The Source of Home Fires An 'arc fault' is a non-working flow of electricity characterized by low current, fast bursts, super hot and erratic flows. These 'wild sparks' of electricity in your home are the cause of 40,000 home fires each year. 1 Arc faults may occur for many reasons such as worn electrical insulation, damaged wire, damaged cords, or driving a nail into a wall and having it inadvertently hit a wire. Fortunately, there are now Arc Fault Circuit Interrupters (AFCI) breakers that can sense these micro bursts of wild electricity and switch off. The National Electric Code now requires that new homes have ARCIs installed in the bedrooms. While these devices are similar to the Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters(GFCI), what they prevent is different. ARCIs prevent fires, while GFCIs prevent shock. What if your home doesn't have ARCIs? Don't worry unless you have a few risk factors such as 1) multiple extension cords in the bedrooms, 2) homes is older that 20 years, 3) presence of older lamps or plug in devices or 4) 'handyman' type wiring present. Last weekend's fire at the historic Old Key Lime House may have been caused by such an arc fault. |
