Corrosion – An Electrical Menace

In South Florida, corrosion is a major problem. Fixtures, meter boxes, control cabinets, wiring, pumps and poles are very susceptible to this destructive force.

There are two types of corrosion, Oxidation and Electrolytic.

Oxidation corrosion occurs when little chemical receptors inherent in metals bind with oxygen in the air. This reaction creates heat and an oxide film. We see this film as 'rust.' The problem is that this new 'film' is larger than the refined metal which leads to the bubbles or cracks in the metal's coating. Over time this expansion and contraction changes the metal's properties and strength. We try to mitigate this process with primers, sealants and paints, but oxygen and metals are determined lovers and find a way to be together. Salts, sunlight, and friction often help oxygen to find its way to the metal.

The other type is Electrolytic. This is when two types of metals interact and erode. Customers that have their meters or services replaced, can usually blame this type of corrosion. Aluminum wire combining with copper, zinc or other metals causes 'pitting' and eventual failure.

Nothing can prevent this processes, but you can take steps to mitigate the problems.

1) Realize the danger. Exterior electrical components really need to be changed out after 15 years. Don't wait until they collapse and disintegrate!

2) Inspect your exterior electrical boxes. These enclosures are made to protect you and your wiring. They can't protect you, if they are corroded.

3) Buy fiberglass enclosures, fixtures and poles. Fiberglass is not metal, therefore it can't corrode. Wesworth always has fiberglass alternatives for your needs.
