The National Electric Code requires that all outside outlets have an “in-use” cover to allow the cord to be in use AND protect the receptacle from the weather. In the trade, we call this a “bubble cover.” The problem is most of them are flimsy plastic that break the first time you use them. Now we have them in Metal for an affordable price.

Get em for $17.00 each instead of the plastic units for $13.00.

Pole Light Lamp Cycling – Its on, its off

Season's Greetings from all of us at Wesworth. Next WattsUP in 2008.

Lamp Cycling is a phenomenon when High Intensity Discharge (HID) lamps turn on and off repeatedly. HID lamps are mainly used in exterior lighting and in warehouses.

Many people will notice this event on their street or on the highway when a pole light suddenly goes off and then starts to glow again. The cycle can last every hour or every few minutes. Either way, this action is telling you that the fixture needs to be repaired.

The cycling occurs because of the nature of these particular lamps. Unlike regular incandescent light bulbs, these HID bulbs produce light by evaporating metals into a gas. This gas is then energized with an arc discharge, causing the lamp to glow.

The cycling effect begins when a) the lamp demands more voltage from the ballast which b) causes the pressure and temperature in the lamp to rise, leading to c) the arc to fail and d) the lamp to go out and cool down. The cycle begins again when the lamp is cool.

Many things can trigger the cycle, but usually it is a sign that the metals inside have broken down and the lamp needs to be replaced.

Wesworth's NightOwl service visits communities and parking lots to look for fixtures out or cycling. If you notice a cycling light in your community or business, give Wesworth a call for a prompt repair. If you see a pole out on the road or highway, report it to FPL here.
