GFIs or Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter receptacle is a device installed in many people's homes that can save lives. Often installed in bathrooms and kitchens, these outlets with 2 push buttons are the “airbags” in the electrical field.

GFIs constantly monitor the electricity flowing through the circuit. If any electricity is 'lost' in the circuit, the GFI switches off nearly instantly. This 'loss' is caused when electricity takes an unintentional path off the circuit. Dropping your hairdryer into the bathtub will cause electricity to go on a 'unintentional path' through the water (and maybe you) to the plumbing pipes.

If you had that hairdryer plugged into a working GFI receptacle, that loss would be detected and the circuit shut down. Fortunately, you can test your GFIs without getting in the bathtub with a hairdryer... by using the Test button on your device. If pushing the Test button does not shut the circuit down and cause the Reset button to pop out, call us to check and replace the GFI. Please for your safety, check those GFIs regularly.
