Unlike many other trades and professions, the electrical industry is constantly increasing standards to improve safety in your home and business. These standard are codified in the National Electric Code, created by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). The latest version, approved last August goes even further in trying to prevent fires and injury throughout the country. While these guidelines are usually applied only to new construction, existing homes and businesses should be aware of the changes. It is in these older structures that most of 5000 structural fires due to faulty wiring occur each year. The NFPA is committed to reducing this number each year as their guidelines are gradually implemented in the structures. You can thank the NEC code for saving many lives through their requirement of GFCI outlets starting in 1975. Another safety innovation is the Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter. In the 2008 Code this AFCI device is being required through the dwelling in specific attempt to reduce bedroom and living room fires. Bottomline, while the new NEC code can add additional requirements, expenses and hassles to your electrical project, the Code has proven itself to have saved many lives and buildings.
