Large-Scale Retail Transformation: The Walmart Store Remodel
When Walmart initiates a store remodel, the electrical scope is anything but simple. This is about modernizing an entire facility’s electrical infrastructure across 16 active zones, all while customers shop, medications stay refrigerated, and registers keep ringing.
- The Challenge: Full Electrical Overhaul Inside an Operating Store
The defining constraint of this project wasn’t technical, it was operational. Every decision had to account for a store that could not stop functioning.
- Active environment: Electrical work was performed across all departments: Pharmacy, Electronics, Front Checkouts, Deli, Bakery, Garden Center, and more while the store remained open to the public.
- Zero tolerance for unplanned outages: Every power cut required advance coordination and approval from the Store Manager and Walmart’s Construction Manager.
- Critical systems protection: The Pharmacy refrigeration had to remain energized through every phase of construction with no exceptions. Medications cannot be compromised, and that responsibility shaped how we sequenced every step of the work.
- Code and corporate compliance: All work had to meet current Florida Electrical Code requirements while simultaneously satisfying Walmart’s own corporate construction standards.
The Wesworth Approach: Precision Planning and Sequenced Execution
We treated this project the way it deserved to be treated as a complex, multi-phase operation where the order of work mattered as much as the work itself.
- 16-zone coordination: From the main electrical rooms and distribution panels all the way to individual department outlets, every zone was assessed, planned, and executed in sequence to avoid conflicts and protect live systems.
- New infrastructure where it counted: The Pickup and Online Grocery zone received a brand new 75 kVA transformer and dedicated distribution panel; built from the ground up to support Walmart’s expanding fulfillment operations.
- Full POS and self-checkout reconfig: The entire front-end checkout system, including self-checkout lanes, POS circuits, UPS connections, and power poles, was rewired and verified without a single day of register downtime.
- Pharmacy panel replacement: A new panel was installed for the Pharmacy while keeping refrigeration circuits live throughout requiring careful staging and hands-on coordination at every step.
- Exterior and Garden Center: Outside the building, we demolished the existing Garden Center lighting and rebuilt it from scratch, including wall pack installations and reconnection to existing site circuits.
The Result: A Modernized Store
Every system in this store was touched, verified, and left better than we found it. Walmart’s operations continued without interruption, their pharmacy never lost refrigeration, and every department came out of the renovation with clean, code-compliant electrical infrastructure ready for the next decade of use.
